The Song of Everlasting Regret, a musical which has been a popular tourism attraction in Shaanxi province in Northwest China, is undergoing the annual performance evaluation for the classic version that will resume on March 15 to welcome the new peak tourism season.

The production is based on the poem of the same name by the Tang Dynasty (618-907) poet Bai Juyi (772-846). The poem vividly depicts the magnificent scenery of the high Tang Dynasty and the love legend between Emperor Xuanzong (r. 712-56) and his consort Yang Yuhuan (719-56).

The performance evaluation was divided into two parts: technical skills and theatrical works. The performers demonstrated solid dance skills and excellent performance levels.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the performance of the musical. As a dancer and artistic director who grew up together with the musical, Xue Leikai said that what everyone saw was the glamorous performance rather than the rigorous rehearsal process.

“Even though the performance for tourists didn't end until 3 am, those actors still persisted in their daily dance training,” Xue said.

The actors said that they use their professional and exciting performances to interpret Chinese stories, convey Chinese culture, and contribute to the high-quality development of Shaanxi's tourism and entertainment industry.
