The Tengwang Pavilion (or the Pavilion of Prince Teng), reputed as “the first pavilion in the west of the south of the Yangtze River,” was initially built in the fourth year of the Yonghui Period in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) by Hongzhou Prefecture Military Governor Li Yuanying, who was a young brother of Li Shimin, the second emperor of the Tang Dynasty.
The Tengwang Pavilion is mentioned in The Preface to Tengwang Pavilion, written by Wang Bo, a celebrated poet during the early Tang Dynasty.
Tengwang Pavilion Scenic Area covers an area of 4.16 hectares. Facing Ganjiang River and neighboring the city, adjacent to Nanpu, the pavilion stands prominantly only about one hundred meters away from its original site in the Tang Dynasty. The main pavilion boasts nine floors with a net height of 57.5 meters and a total area of 13,000 square kilometers with features reflective of the magnificent style of a Tang Dynasty pavilion.
