Huangmei opera, which originated in Huangmei in Hubei province, expanded in Anqing of Anhui province. It’s considered one of China’s five major operas together with Peking, Yueju, Pingju and Yuju operas. This rich-heritage art form has found a thriving home in Anqing.
Anqing previously hosted two successful sessions of the Huangmei Opera Festival in 1992 and ’95, when a series of works with national influence were rolled out. As a result, Anqing's domestic and international profile was significantly raised, giving a substantial boost to the local economy.
During the festival, Anqing is filled with a vibrant artistic atmosphere. Huangmei opera features three types of tune: Coloratura, Caiqiang and homophony. Huangmei opera is adept at expressing emotions and has lasting appeal. The arias are fine and smooth and show strong expressive powers. The melodious sounds echo throughout the city, drawing visitors from home and abroad.
The festival has become a vital gateway for Anqing's engagement with the outside world and a key platform for attracting investment.
