4. Mount Wutai Sixth-Lunar-Month Temple Fair
Location: Taihuai town, Wutai county, Xinzhou city
Frequency: Annual
Dates: On the first day of the sixth lunar month, lasting about one month
The Mount Wutai Sixth-Lunar-Month Temple Fair is held annually in the sixth lunar month at Mount Wutai, featuring the traditional Xu Ma (Donkey and Horse) Fair, which dates back to the Sui and Tang dynasties (581–907). During this period, the region around Taihuai—modern-day Mount Wutai in Shanxi province—developed the custom of hosting the Temple Fair. Over time, as Mount Wutai became more famous, the Xu Ma Fair grew in scale, with over 10,000 cattle, donkeys, mules, and horses being brought to the riverbank each day.
Additionally, pilgrims, monks, and tourists gather to pay homage at the temples. Local monks also perform within the temple during the fair. Beginning on the 16th day of the sixth lunar month, processions take place featuring parades, palanquins, chanting groups, and drum ensembles, with the procession stretching over a mile. Outside the temples, stage platforms are set up for theatrical performances, adding a lively atmosphere to the fair.
