2. Tiancang Festival
Location: Jinzhong city
Frequency: Annual
Dates: On the 25th day of the first lunar month
The Tiancang Festival, which falls on the 25th day of the first month of the Chinese lunar calendar, is a unique ethnic celebration in Shanxi province, where people pray for a good harvest in the New Year.
It was recorded in ancient archives that during the Tiancang Festival, it was customary to host banquets for friends, ensuring guests left drunk and satisfied. In modern times, Shanxi's folk customs emphasize the importance of welcoming abundance and avoiding waste. This tradition involves filling the granary with grain, replenishing water jars, and placing coal at the door to protect the home. Some elderly urban residents continue the practice of buying rice and flour on this day, hoping to ensure a year of prosperity, ample food and good fortune.
