Dates: Usually from the 28th day of the 12th lunar month to the 18th day of the first lunar month
The Shanxi Jinshang Shehuo Festival boasts a long history and has deep cultural roots. The festival originates from ancient sacrificial activities, where people prayed for a good harvest and prosperity through song and dance. The term "She" originally referred to the God of Earth, while "Huo" literally means fire, which ancient people believed had the magical power to drive away evil spirits.
Historical records indicate the existence of Shehuo as early as the Spring and Autumn Period (770–476 BC). In some areas, Shehuo merged with temple fairs in a vibrant blend of traditions.
The Shehuo performance showcases the rich folk culture of Shanxi. Today, people celebrate the festival with various folk customs, such as stilt walking, yangko (a lively folk dance), and lion dance, all of which serve to emphasize the region's cultural traditions.
