Here's a special "apple" for Christmas Eve from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). This apple-shaped vase, now housed in the National Museum of China, is a masterpiece of Emperor Kangxi-era (r.1662-1722) innovation. The vase is adorned with exquisite underglaze red floral motifs, featuring blooming lotus, peony, chrysanthemum and camellia.

Since the first Chinese character for "apple" (ping guo) rhymes with those for "safety" (ping an) and for "Christmas Eve" (ping'an ye), some Chinese people eat apples on Christmas Eve to wish for a safe and happy year, regardless of their religious beliefs. This tradition reflects the inclusiveness of Chinese culture.
