Jinan, the capital of Shandong province, has become China's first city to implement a large-scale intelligent sensing road network.
Located in the Jinan Start-up Area for Growth Drivers Transformation, the completion of 12 smart roads and the ongoing construction of 27 others position the city as a leader in smart urban infrastructure.
Suitong No 1 is a crucial device for road monitoring that contains a time-domain optical road fusion sensing monitor and a data processing module. It forecasts road conditions by setting thresholds and analyzing curve fluctuations to detect changes in road temperature and pressure.
The data processing module collects real-time monitoring data from the entire network of smart roads in the area and sends it to the control center's early warning platform for analysis.
"The control center of the intelligent sensing road network is equipped with a large sign that displays real-time road conditions. If there are problems like roadbed settlements, cracks, potholes, debris, collisions, or congestion, the system will promptly issue alerts," said Wang Xiaochao, senior engineer at the construction management department of the Jinan Start-up Area.
He also added that the system will eventually be integrated with traffic lights that adjust to traffic conditions to help alleviate congestion.
