Two films shot in Datong, North China's Shanxi province, have won prestigious awards at international film festivals, marking a first for the city.

At the 2024 Asian International Film Festival's "Golden Ibis Awards" in Macao, Xiangqin (Fellow Villagers) and My Taxi Dad won Best Rural Feature Film and Best Children's Film, respectively. At the 3rd Hong Kong Bauhinia International Film Festival in Hong Kong, Xiangqin secured Best Rural Revitalization Film in the main competition category.

Both films, produced by Datong native Gao Shan, chairman of Datong Asia-Europe Inland Port Cultural Tourism Co, celebrate Datong's rich culture and heritage. Xiangqin was filmed in Zuoyun county, showcasing the Great Wall and local traditions. It tells the touching story of Juanzi, a rural student village official diagnosed with leukemia, and the collective efforts of her community to help her overcome her illness, highlighting themes of solidarity and love.

My Taxi Dad is shot in Datong's Yungang district and vividly reflects local life by portraying the heartwarming relationship between a taxi driver and a young girl.

Gao Shan, a multi-talented filmmaker and cultural advocate, has also used his projects to promote Datong's budding acting talents. Thus, his work has significantly contributed to the city's cultural industry and its visibility on global platforms.
