Ningbo, Zhejiang province, kicked off a star-studded opera event on Nov 6 to honor Zhou Xinfang, a renowned Peking Opera master.
Zhou Xinfang (1895-1975), who hailed from Ningbo, made his first public performance at the age of seven, singing in the role of an elderly man. After his performance style became established and widely recognized, he was recognized as the founder of the "Qi" school of Peking Opera.
The opening night of the Zhou Xinfang Opera Season saw the Ningbo Grand Theater filled with 18 winners of the China Theatre Plum Blossom Award, the country's top award for theater and opera performers, including Chen Shaoyun, a three-time winner and direct disciple of Zhou's Qi school. Chen, along with other esteemed artists such as Mao Weitao, Mao Shanyu, and Fang Yafen, treated the audience to a mesmerizing showcase of Peking Opera, Huangmei Opera, Yueju Opera, and other genres.
Chen's rendition of Zhou's classic Xu Ce Scurries, joined by his two disciples, was a highlight of the night. The performance combined elements of Peking Opera, Hebei Bangzi, and Huangmei Opera, showcasing the diversity and richness of China's operatic traditions.
In addition to opera fans, the event also attracted local representatives from sectors such as firefighting, healthcare, sanitation, and education.
Wang Meifang, a local labor model, expressed her admiration for Zhou's spirit of seeking truth from facts and innovating while preserving traditions. "Zhou is more than a prominent figure in the opera world; his spirit inspires us to excel in our respective fields and contribute to society," she said.
"My grandfather dedicated his life to the preservation and development of Peking Opera art. This event is not only a tribute to him but also a reaffirmation of his outstanding artistic achievements and deep love for country," said Zhou Yilin, Zhou's granddaughter.
The Zhou Xinfang Opera Season will run for 100 days, featuring eight events until January, 2025.
