Ordos was named one of the "Biodiversity Charming Cities" in the second edition of the global list, making it the only city in Northwest China to receive this honor.
The announcement was made at the 8th Summit of Subnational Governments and Cities held in Cali, Colombia, on Oct 26. It was a parallel event of the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity.

The summit was co-hosted by the Secretariat of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability, Regions4 Sustainable Development, and the city of Cali. Representatives from over 200 cities and regions in more than 100 countries participated in the event.
Other recognized Chinese regions and cities include Beijing, Ninghe district in Tianjin, Anji county in Zhejiang province, Shiyan city in Hubei province, Beilun district in Ningbo city, Shaoxing city in Zhejiang province, Xiamen city in Fujian province, and Lishui city in Zhejiang province.
