Huizhou ancient architecture is vital for Huizhou culture and Huangshan city, the origin of Huizhou culture, has set up an extensive system its development.
To support its growth, policies have been rolled out including the Technical Guidelines for Huizhou Ancient Residential Buildings detail construction methods for unique elements.
Paving the way forwards, the Huizhou Ancient Architecture Industry Development Association leads in the creation of published standards such as the Brick Carving Technical Guide of Huizhou Ancient Architecture.
The city has also expanded technological advancements for traditional craftsmanship. Projects like the Protection of Traditional Settlements in Huizhou by the Anhui Huizhou Classical Garden have won awards. Patents – including the one designated as the "Wooden Structure Reinforcement" patent – have been secured by local manufacturer Anhui Ruiming Construction.
Policies attracting talent are said to be proving effective, with 550 artisans recognized since 2022. Institutions like Anhui Xingzhi School and heritage bases are also nurturing skilled artisans.
To date, there are 274 enterprises in the city engaged in the construction of antique buildings, the restoration, protection and utilization of ancient buildings, the components and accessories of ancient buildings and the supply chain of cultural and creative decorative products.
In 2023, the Huizhou ancient architecture industry's value was estimated to be 2.8 billion yuan ($393.5 million). By September 2024, it had reached 3.1 billion yuan, a 50.1 percent increase.
