The Xi'an Theater staged the traditional Chinese body language drama "Zhu Er Dan" at the National Asian Culture Center in Gwangju, South Korea, on Oct 19 and 20. This successful showcase marked the completion of Chinese drama's presence at the 28th BeSeTo Festival 2024.
This international performance signifies Xi'an Theater's initiative to share Chinese stories and culture and to foster international cultural exchange on a global stage.
Adapted from Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) novelist Pu Songling's Liaozhai Zhiyi (Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio), the drama "Zhu Er Dan" has been featured on various domestic theater exchange platforms, blending traditional Chinese aesthetics with a modern spirit.
The South Korean audience offered an enthusiastic reception to the performance, engaging in discussions with the creators and actors about the play's profound themes, the use of Chinese intangible cultural heritage and opera, and the exploration of modern Chinese drama.
Local spectators expressed their appreciation for the performance, with one mother noting, "My son was captivated by the actors' expressive body language throughout the play. It's a great opportunity to understand traditional Chinese culture. I didn't expect such a high-quality Chinese drama; I hope to see more such productions in South Korea in the future."
