The list of Shanghai's top 100 foreign-invested enterprises (FIEs) for 2023 was unveiled on Oct 15. A total of 258 FIEs made the cut across four categories: operation revenue, import and export volume, tax contribution, and job creation.
The top 100 FIEs generated a combined revenue that accounted for 33.48 percent of the total revenue of all foreign-invested enterprises in Shanghai involved in the annual foreign investment report. Their total import and export volume represented 47.09 percent of the total for all FIEs in the city. Additionally, their total tax payments amounted to 34 percent of the tax contributions from all participating foreign-invested enterprises, while they employed 18 percent of the total workforce of these enterprises.
Notably, more than half of the top 100 enterprises, totaling 137, are located in Shanghai's Pudong New Area, with 118 registered in the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone. In terms of the countries/regions of investors, the United States led with 83 enterprises, an increase of 4 from the previous year, followed by Japan with 32 and Germany with 28. The industries with the highest representation among the top 100 FIEs were wholesale and retail, manufacturing, and leasing and business services.
