Since initiating the comprehensive energy reform, North China's Shanxi province has made significant progress in deepening reform and innovation, enhancing coordination, and advancing pilot projects.
Shanxi leads the nation in intelligent coal mining, with over 50 percent of its coal production capacity now using smart mining. Thirty green pilot demonstration mines have been established, with advanced coal production capacity accounting for nearly 82 percent. Shanxi has maintained the top coal production in the nation for four consecutive years.
New and clean energy development has accelerated significantly. By the end of August, installed capacity reached 48 percent, a 14.1 percentage point increase from 2019. Unconventional natural gas production has also reached a historic high, doubling in 2023 compared to 2019.
Green transportation is rapidly advancing, with the "highway + photovoltaic" model being widely promoted. Zhuangshang village in Yuncheng city has become the first "China Zero Carbon Demonstration Village".
Shanxi has also established the Taiyuan Energy Low Carbon Development Forum and collaborated with international organizations such as the Asian Development Bank and the European Investment Bank to implement green and low-carbon development demonstration projects.
Moving forward, the province will accelerate the planning and construction of a new energy system that is clean, low-carbon, safe, efficient, and primarily based on non-fossil energy. Coal power will be used as a backup guarantee, and green, smart, energy-saving practices will be the energy consumption orientation.
