The inaugural Institute for Global South Studies has been launched at Tianjin University, a significant step forward in fostering international collaboration among Global South nations.

The event featured a prestigious seminar, entitled "Cooperation and Development of the Global South Amidst a Century of Transformation" that brought esteemed experts and former diplomats together.

Yang Xianjin, Party Secretary of Tianjin University, emphasized the institute's crucial role in strengthening China's partnerships with Global South countries in a rapidly evolving global landscape. He highlighted the need for robust intellectual support to facilitate these collaborations.

The term "Global South" encompasses developing countries in Africa, Latin America, Asia and parts of Oceania, characterized by their economies and lower levels of industrialization. These nations face common challenges, including poverty, inequality and climate change. China plays a pivotal role in Global South organization, acting as a key partner in economic development, political cooperation and cultural exchange. Initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) exemplify China's commitment to facilitating trade and economic growth through infrastructure projects across these regions.

Keynote addresses at the launch from prominent figures, including former ambassadors and university leaders, underscored the urgency and relevance of regional studies in today's world. Participants shared innovative strategies to enhance cooperation and investment between China and Africa, emphasizing a collective vision for the future.

Professor Wang Zhan, head of the newly established institute and a faculty member at Tianjin University's School of Foreign Languages, said the institute represents a forward-thinking initiative that acknowledges the importance of collaboration in an interconnected world.

"By focusing on the Global South, our institute will address pressing global challenges while fostering unity among countries facing similar obstacles," Wang said.

The event concluded with the official unveiling of the institute, signaling a new era of research and collaboration aimed at promoting prosperity in Global South regions. This initiative is poised to enhance China's influence in global affairs and drive impactful research in the years ahead.
