Erdem Ozturk, a Turkish expat and avid promoter of cross-cultural ties, expressed immense joy as Ningbo, Zhejiang province, and Bursa, Turiye, inked an agreement to establish friendly relations on Sept 13, Beijing time.

"Bursa is my hometown, Ningbo my second home – both are vibrant hubs with rich cultures," said Ozturk. The partnership stems from a shared vision fostered by government support on both sides and Ozturk's relentless efforts over the past three years to forge a bond between the two cities.

Ozturk arrived in Ningbo in 2013 as an engineer at a Turkish steel fabrication company in Beilun district. Quickly adapting to life in the bustling city, he explored its natural wonders, immersed himself in its local customs, and mastered basic Chinese. Recognizing Ningbo's robust manufacturing base and Bursa's automotive prowess, he leveraged his network to facilitate trade ties, eventually venturing into entrepreneurship in 2020.

Inspired by Ningbo's welcoming business culture, Ozturk dreamed of forging a sister city relationship between his two homes. He saw parallels in their shared maritime histories – Bursa as an ancient Silk Road terminus and Ningbo as the cradle of the Maritime Silk Road – as well as their status as industrial strongholds and major ports. His idea garnered attention from both cities' governments, leading to a series of negotiations that culminated in the signing ceremony.

"The support of both governments has been instrumental," said Ozturk, who remained steadfast in his efforts despite pandemic setbacks. He believes the partnership will strengthen economic ties and foster exchanges in education, culture, and tourism.

His vision caught the attention of the Ningbo authorities, which embraced the initiative, leading to fruitful negotiations and the eventual signing of an agreement.

To celebrate the occasion, Ningbo organized a photography exhibit showcasing its charm in Bursa, while a dedicated Ningbo booth at Bursa's International Food Festival drew crowds.

"This partnership marks a new chapter in Ningbo's international cooperation," said an official of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Ningbo Municipal People's Government, underscoring the bright prospects for cooperation and cultural exchange between the two sister cities.
