On Aug 11, Shanghai's airports achieved record-breaking numbers, with a total of 2,386 flights and 397,000 passengers.
According to Shanghai Airport Authority, Shanghai Pudong International Airport handled 1,597 flights and 254,000 passengers, while Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport managed 789 flights and 143,000 passengers. Both single-day flight operations and passenger numbers were historic highs.
Since the start of the summer travel season, a mix of tourist and student traffic has driven the increase in flights and passengers. From July 1 to Aug 11, Shanghai's airports collectively managed 96,000 flights, with Pudong Airport accounting for 65,000 and Hongqiao Airport for 31,000. This averages to 2,293 flights per day, a 10.1 percent increase from the previous year. Passenger numbers totaled 15.34 million, with Pudong Airport serving 9.74 million and Hongqiao Airport 5.6 million, an 18.2 percent year-on-year rise.
To cater to the summer travel rush, Shanghai's airports have upgraded their facilities and services to enhance the travel experience. One-stop service centers and entry facilitation points have been set up at both airports, offering comprehensive services for payment, inquiries, communication, and transportation.
During the summer travel season, Shanghai's airports have also launched a two-month "Culture + Commerce + Service" series of activities as part of the Shanghai Summer International Consumption Season and its cultural brand "China Young." This includes commercial promotions and weekly cultural performances, providing passengers with engaging and family-friendly experiences.
