Boxer Wu Yu, from Southwest China's Guizhou province, clinched the championship in the women's 50kg at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Aug 9 local time.
This marks China's first victory in the women's 50kg boxing category since women's boxing became an official event at the 2012 London Olympics, and the 33rd gold medal for Team China at the Paris Olympics.
Born in 1995 in Guizhou's Guiding county, Wu enjoys dancing, singing, and traveling. She started boxing at the age of 15 and received boxing training at an amateur sports school in Qiannan Bouyei and Miao autonomous prefecture.
In September 2021, she joined the boxing team at the Shanghai Elite Sport Training Administrative Center. She won the first women's boxing gold medal in the history of the Military World Games in the women's 48-51kg boxing final in 2019.
In 2023, she secured the gold medal in women's 50kg boxing at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou. The Paris Olympics marks her Olympic debut.
