In Guiyang – capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province – bus operator Guiyang Bus Co on Aug 1 installed shared free Wi-Fi devices on 14 buses on its 311 route – allowing passengers to enjoy complimentary internet access during their journey.
As a result, inside the buses, passengers can spot signs stating Wi-Fi fully covered here, as well as scan with WeChat to use for free, along with a QR code.
By scanning the code, users are directed to the Mizhi Cloud Wi-Fi page, where they can connect to the internet with a simple click. The Wi-Fi signal covers an area of 8-10 meters, with an upload speed of 50 megabits per second and a download speed of 150 Mbps.
"Today, I found that I could connect to free Wi-Fi on the bus just by scanning the QR code. It's very convenient," said local resident Zhang Yan, praising the initiative.
The Guiyang Bus Co plans to extend the service to routes 63 and 306, with 18 more buses being equipped for testing. Depending on the results, the service will be gradually expanded to all buses.
