The Temple of Confucius in Qufu, Shandong province, was built to commemorate and offer sacrifices to the great philosopher, politician and educator Confucius (551-479 BC). It is known as "the No 1 temple in the world " and, along with the Forbidden City in Beijing and the Mountain Resort in Chengde, Hebei province, is considered one of China's three major ancient architectural complexes.
