Rare birds of Yellow River Delta steal spotlight in award-winning doc

Shandong Radio and Television Station's documentary Life at the Yellow River Delta has garnered worldwide recognition by clinching three prestigious awards at the 45th Telly Awards.

The documentary, which was produced in a collaborative effort with National Geographic Channel and other organizations, was honored as the Gold Winner in both the Nature & Wildlife and Videography & Cinematography categories, while also securing the Silver Winner title in the Documentary: Short Form (under 40 minutes) category.

The documentary vividly showcases the daily life of Oriental white storks, which is a first-class protected animal in China and an endangered species on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

The Oriental white stork has been living in the Yellow River Delta for nearly 20 years, breeding over 3,000 chicks. The Yellow River Delta in Dongying, Shandong, known as the home of the Oriental white stork due to its status as one of the most important global breeding grounds for the bird, has consistently attracted and provided a suitable home for the species, leading to promising results.

Data shows that the Oriental white stork began breeding in Dongying in 2005, with a cumulative 2,748 chicks being born by 2022. By 2023, the total number had exceeded 3,000, with over 450 offspring bred during each of the past two years. During the migration period, the number peaks at around 2,000 per year.
