According to the Sports Bureau of Shanxi Province, Taiyuan city has been named the host city for the final of the 2024 World Taekwondo Grand Prix.
The World Taekwondo Grand Prix was established in 2013 and is a high-scoring Olympic points competition and one of the most commercially valuable international sports events created by the World Taekwondo Federation around Olympic qualifications.
It consists of three stages: challenge matches, regional tournaments, and the final (only held in Olympic years). The regional tournaments are at the G6 Olympic points level (meaning the champion earns 60 Olympic points), while the final is at the G10 Olympic points level, making it the highest-scoring series in the regular competitions set by the World Taekwondo Federation.
The World Taekwondo Grand Prix has previously been held in cities such as Paris, Rome, and Moscow. In 2023, Taiyuan successfully hosted a regional tournament of the World Taekwondo Grand Prix and the World Para Taekwondo Grand Prix.
The Taiyuan 2023 World Taekwondo Grand Prix and Taiyuan 2023 World Para Taekwondo Grand Prix attracted over 700 participants from more than 64 countries and regions.
These events brought Taiyuan direct economic benefits of over 15 million yuan ($2.07 million) and an output effect worth 23.44 million yuan, generating a media value of 289 million yuan.
The final of the 2024 World Taekwondo Grand Prix will attract top Olympic athletes to Taiyuan. During the event, the annual World Taekwondo Awards Ceremony will be held, with over 500 representatives from around the world invited, bringing more global attention to Taiyuan.
