In this Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) painting, a tranquil scene is captured. Distant rolling green mountains, a riverside with green pines and a lone boat by the shore. Inside the boat, an elderly literatus sits on a mat, leaning against a curved armrest. Scrolls wrapped in book covers rest beside him. A young attendant crouches nearby, preparing tea, and a boatman steers the boat. The painting brings to life the dignified demeanor of an ancient Chinese scholar and his pursuit of the serene simplicity of a reclusive rural life. Collection: Liaoning Provincial Museum.
