A growing number of tourists are flocking to the Tiantai Mountain in Qionglai city, Sichuan province, as the firefly-watching season approaches its peak.
The Tiantai Mountain Scenic Area, located 110 kilometers from downtown Chengdu, the Sichuan provincial capital, is one of the largest firefly viewing sites in Asia and the first firefly ecotourism scenic spot in China, according to the scenic area's administration bureau.
The scenic area boasts more than 20 species of fireflies. These species mature at different times between April and October each year, resulting in several peak periods for firefly watching.
Staff members from the administration bureau said the Tiantai Mountain Scenic Area receives about 400,000 firefly-watching tourists each year, significantly boosting the local night economy and generating a consumption volume of nearly 130 million yuan ($18 million).
Firefly ecotourism has also created over 2,000 jobs for local villagers in the scenic area, contributing to the region's sustainable development.
Wang Xinghai, a 65-year-old local villager, has converted his house into a happy farmhouse to receive tourists.
"During last year's peak season, we received almost 2,000 visitors in just one month. This year, we have cleaned up and prepared 16 guest rooms in advance," he said, adding that his family has prepared special rural delicacies for tourists.
