The Wuhan Municipal Landscape Gardens and Forestry Bureau announced the "Family Gardens" exhibition winners on Monday at the Shahu Park venue of the 2024 World Garden Show in Wuhan, Hubei province.
The World Garden Show is an international flower exhibition that combines conference, exhibition and garden show features. This year, its main venue is in Haining, Zhejiang province, and Wuhan has a branch venue. Hundreds of horticulturists, families and university teams came to the Central China region to participate in garden creation.
The organizing committee combined online voting and expert evaluation opinions to award multiple awards in categories ranging from creative design to plant application.
The landscaping piece "Impressions of Badhoevedorp", created by horticulturist Li Shihui and her Dutch husband, won a special award due to its exotic style, which attracted a lot of attention.
"In recent days, I have been quite happy to find lots of people sharing my garden on social media," said Li. "During the garden construction process, we exchanged ideas, guided each other, and helped each other, making many friends and benefiting greatly."
The work "Yuxin Garden", created by students and teachers from Hubei Ecology Polytechnic College, received the highest online voting popularity and won the Best Popularity Award.
Chinese-style gardens combine fragrant plants with cool-colored flowers and water rock landscapes in limited space.
"The event provided a great platform for students to apply what they have learned and showcase their professional abilities," said Yue Dan, director of the Department of Landscape Architecture at the college. "Interacting and Exchanging with other design teams and teachers during the garden construction process also gave us valuable experience."
The English garden-style work "Voice of the Wilderness" by popular horticultural blogger Bai Miao and "Family Story" by the Huazhong Agricultural University team won the Comprehensive Display Garden Award.
"The overall quality of the exhibition works is impressive and beyond imagination," said Wang Jianqiang, head of the Institute of Landscape Plants at the Wuhan Institute of Landscape Architecture. "The designs, with a wide variety of flower species and harmonious and beautiful plant combinations, showcased not only landscape design skills but also the concept of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature."
After the closure of the show in Wuhan, these family garden works will continue to be displayed at the park, according to Zhang Qian, a landscape engineer at the park’s management office.
"The park now has over 100 gardens of various sizes, which allows citizens to enjoy a variety of flowers from across the world and also further enhances the green well-being of the citizens," she said.
