This Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220) brick relief captures the convivial banquet of three bosom friends sitting in a cozy room around a table, on which a feast with dishes, wine, cups, bowls and chopsticks unfolds. Two phoenixes perch at each side of the roof, elevating the viewer’s gaze up to the tree and two lofty pavilions depicted in the upper part of the brick, indicating the depth of the scene and the size of the host’s residence.
Through this heartwarming scene, the economic prosperity, social stability and contented lives of the period are revealed. The brick is in the permanent collection of the Sichuan Museum.
