Xi'an reports 5.2% GDP growth in 2023

Xi'an, capital of Northwest China's Shaanxi province, reported a year-on-year increase of 5.2 percent in its gross domestic products (GDP), totaling 1.2 trillion yuan ($167.16 billion) in 2023, according to data release by the city's statistics bureau.

Breaking down the industries, the added value in the city's primary, secondary and tertiary industries reached 32.52 billion yuan, 414.69 billion yuan, and 753.86 billion yuan, respectively, showing respective year-on-year growths of 3.4 percent, 6.2 percent, and 4.7 percent.

The added value in the city's industrial sector above a designated size grew by 9 percent compared to the previous year, surpassing the national and provincial averages by 4.4 and 4 percentage points, respectively.

Advantageous products that were driven by innovation potential were unleashed, with the output of new energy vehicles reaching 983,800. This indicates a 25.9-percent increase from the previous year and accounts for 10.4 percent of the national total.

From January to November, 2023, the operating income of the city's enterprises above a designated size in the service industry increased by 11.5 percent year-on-year. The city's modern service industry continued to thrive, with the operating income from scientific research and technical services growing by 22.1 percent, and that from leasing and business services increasing by 16.1 percent. This includes a 33.7-percent growth in operating income from conference, exhibition-related services.

Throughout the year, the city's consumption also recovered, as its total retail sales of consumer goods reached 481.16 billion yuan, up by 3.7 percent.

The city's fixed asset investment, excluding rural households, increased by a slight 0.1 percent compared to the previous year.

Moreover, total import and export volume of foreign trade last year was 359.76 billion yuan, a 17.4-percent decrease from 2022. However, trade with countries and regions involved in the Belt and Road Initiative increased by 16.4 percent, accounting for 31.2 percent of the city's total import and export value.

The per capita disposable income of urban residents in the city came in at 51,178 yuan, up by 5.7 percent from the previous year, while that of rural residents reached 19,826 yuan, an 8.4-percent increase.
