By the end of 2023, the installed capacity of renewable energy power in Henan province exceeded 67 million kilowatts, with the proportion of coal-power installed capacity historically reduced to less than 50 percent, said the State Grid Henan Electric Power Co.
This is the first time that the installed capacity of renewable energy has surpassed that of coal energy in Henan, whose energy structure has been dominated by coal power for a long time.
In recent years, in accordance with the dual carbon goals and in order to accelerate the planning and construction of new energy systems, Henan has ramped up efforts to ensure energy security and promote green and low-carbon development by improving the proportion of clean energy usage.
In 2023, Henan's renewable energy generation capacity reached 100 billion kilowatt-hours, up 21 percent year-on-year and accounting for about a quarter of its total electricity consumption, said the latest report of the State Grid Henan Electric Power Co.
In addition, the installed capacity of renewable energy in Henan increased from 22.56 million kW in 2019 to 67.76 million kW by the end of 2023, with an annual growth rate of 32 percent, said the company.
The promotion of photovoltaic and wind power as well as pumped hydro storage projects has played a major role, with photovoltaic, wind and hydropower accounting for 55.1 percent, 32.1 percent and 7.9 percent of the province's total new energy installed capacity, respectively, the power supplier said.
