Some 19 international students from the Faculty of Humanities and Foreign Languages at Xi'an University of Technology visited the ancient papermaking intangible cultural heritage experience center in Beizhang village, Xi'an, for an immersive experience on Jan 5.
"The ancient Chinese used the bark of the mulberry tree to make paper. From as far back as 1,900 years ago, people in Beizhang village earned a living by making paper," said Yang Yafei, founder of the center.
Looking at the inconspicuous tree bark in front of them, the international students could not imagine how the bark could be turned into paper. After learning about the village's ancient practices, such as bark-milling, pulping, and paper-drying, they marveled at the wisdom and ingenuity of ancient China.
After they tried their hand at making paper, the students had a great time using the paper to make lanterns, folding fans, and picture frames.
"I think the ancient Chinese were very wise. It's amazing that they could make paper from tree bark," said Ramazan from Kyrgyzstan.
The event is a part of the "Experience the Silk Road Culture in Shaanxi" Chinese Bridge Project.
Through this project, Xi'an University of Technology is able to introduce China's history and culture to overseas countries, especially Shaanxi's intangible cultural heritage.
