Qingdao will play a key role in supporting the future development of Shandong's new energy vehicle (NEV) industry, according to an action plan on the high-quality development of the province's NEV industry released by the Shandong provincial government.
The plan states that Shandong will focus on the development of complete vehicles, core parts, supporting parts, and application promotion, and aim to have the scale of its NEV industry reach 500 billion yuan ($70 billion) by 2025.
Jinan, the capital city of Shandong province, and Qingdao will act as the two core cities to encourage the concentration of production capacity and key supporting facilities. The two cities will also focus on supporting the comprehensive development of passenger cars and commercial vehicles, and create two 100-billion-yuan-level industrial bases.
The implementation of key projects such as new energy passenger vehicles will be promoted in Qingdao to accelerate the expansion of production capacity.
Qingdao, Jinan, Yantai, Jining and Heze have also been listed as key development areas for the core parts and components industry cluster of battery, motor, and electronic control.
According to the action plan, Qingdao will also become one of Shandong's key energy vehicle tire gathering areas. At the same time, it will accelerate the development of charging piles and create new business formats and models of operation.
The action plan also states that Shandong will implement the demonstration application of autonomous driving and support cities such as Qingdao to develop autonomous driving and intelligent network-connected vehicle roads in road sections or areas with low population density and good infrastructure conditions.
