Huzhou in Tan Jiancheng’s paintings: Sangui Pavilion

The Sangui Pavilion, nestled on Zhushan Mountain in the southwest of Huzhou, Zhejiang province, was initially built in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) by Yan Zhenqing (709-84), a renowned official and calligrapher, for hermit Lu Yu (733-804). Ravaged by the erosion of history, it had long been in ruins until its reconstruction in 1993.
The Sangui Pavilion depicted by painter Tan Jiancheng exhibits rich and contrasting brushwork and a vivid reproduction of the pavilion’s former splendid scenery of lush trees and its elegance.
