Eggshell carving, a delicate form of folk handicraft that combines painting and sculpture techniques, is gaining popularity with students at a university in Lanzhou, Gansu province.
At the ethnic crafts college of Lanzhou University of Resources and Environment, some students are learning techniques for carving intricate patterns on bird eggshells to create exquisite designs, from rural scenery to lifelike portraits.
Both students and administrators have responded positively to the inclusion of eggshell carving in the curriculum, as it allows for a combination of tradition and modernity.
According to Yang Xingguo, a tutor, the craft stimulates artistic exploration, communication and inspiration among students.
It also enhances the students' appreciation for art, improves their practical skills and provides new avenues for the protection and inheritance of intangible cultural heritage, he said.
