Qingdao Port's fully automated container terminal, operated by Shandong Port Group (SPG), set a new record on Nov 15 by successfully handling a total of 1,223 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in a single day using just one crane. The remarkable feat, supported by the terminal's in-house developed systems - A-TOS and A-ECS, marks the highest container handling volume reached at the port since May 14 of this year. This accomplishment demonstrates SPG's innovative capability and scientific and technological strength.
Since its establishment on Aug 6, 2019, SPG has stepped up efforts to construct smart and green ports. It has continuously scaled new heights in automated terminal construction and built Qingdao Port's fully automated container terminal phase II with new innovative technologies. In addition, it has independently-developed an automated terminal operating system A-TOS and a horizontal transportation intelligent control system A-ECS. These advanced systems are not only safer, but also more efficient and convenient, and will provide strong support for improving port operation efficiency.
Since the beginning of the year, Qingdao Port has continued to strengthen pivotal functions and improve seaborne and inland connectivity, which has created a strong foundation for the automated terminal to expand service in hinterland areas and development. From January to October this year, Qingdao Port opened 18 shipping routes, of which five were launched by the automated terminal. Additionally, the terminal witnessed a year-on-year increase of 10 percent in container volume, thanks to the help of an intelligent inspection model from Huangdao Customs.
