Semiconductor chip project starts operation in Baotou

Inner Mongolia autonomous region achieved a significant milestone on Oct 29 when the Beilan new generation semiconductor integrated circuit chip plant was completed and started operating in Baotou city, North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region.

It marked the successful implementation of the region's first semiconductor chip manufacturing facility.

The project is said to fill a gap in Inner Mongolia's semiconductor manufacturing sector, while also providing a new path for industrial transformation in the city of Baotou, a traditional industrial hub.

The semiconductor chip is often referred to as the "heart" of electronic products and plays a core role in the information society.

The facility involves a 1.5-billion-yuan ($205.22 million) investment from the Weill Holding Group in South China's Guangdong province.

It includes integrated circuit chip production lines, intelligent designs, clean and intelligent manufacturing, software research and development centers and more.

It will produce products such as MCU central microelectronic control chips, processing chips and IGBT power control chips – with a planned total annual production of 1.2 billion chips, creating substantial economic value.

The project is widely said to have the potential to drive the semiconductors industry in Inner Mongolia.

It will also collaborate with world-renowned companies in applications spanning aviation, aerospace, smart home appliances, military controls, automotive electronic automation equipment and other fields.

At the same time, it is seen as injecting new energy into the transformation and development of Baotou – helping traditional industries move towards higher-end, greener and more intelligent directions.
