Mooncake industry thrives in Maonan district

The mooncake industry in Maoming's Maonan district is steadily growing.

Currently, there are 37 mooncake production companies in Maonan district, mainly producing Cantonese-style mooncakes and a small amount of ice skin mooncakes.

In2022, the mooncake production in Maonan district was approximately 2,200 metric tons, with sales reaching about 350 million yuan ($48 million), and provided employment for around 8,000 people.

Maoming Jiahaoxuan Food Company, a mooncake company based in Maonan, has seen continuous growth in mooncake sales over the years. "Maoming is a city full of kindness, and it is also the 'hometown of Chinese mooncakes', while Maonan is the best place in the region," said Chen Jinxuan, chairman of the company.

As an inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage of mooncake-making method in Maoming, Chen leads a technical team with over 30 years of experience in mooncake production and has developed a unique set of techniques and skills to create mooncakes that cater to consumer tastes.

In recent years, Maonan district has strengthened supervision and random inspections in the production process of mooncakes, with a qualification rate consistently above 98 percent, and the district has launched four initiatives to promote the high-quality development of the mooncake industry.
