The transport hubs in northern Guangzhou will be bolstered with the expansions of the airport and Guangzhou North railway station.
The ongoing third-phase construction at the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport includes terminal 3, two runways, a comprehensive transport hub and two airside concourses in terminal 2.
When completed in 2025, the airport's annual passenger and freight handling capacity will increase to 120 million and 3.8 million tons respectively, according to the Guangdong Airport Authority.
Six high-speed railways and three inter-city railways connecting to the airport are either planned or being built, adding to the existing subway line and two highways.
Guangzhou North in Huadu district, the high-speed railway station closest to the airport, currently serves five high-speed, inter-city and ordinary railways and a subway line.
More such railways passing through Guangzhou North are being built or planned, including the second Guangzhou-Shenzhen high-speed railway.
Also planned are a railway connecting the airport to Guangzhou North station and the airport's fourth terminal at the station, where check-in and security check services are provided to air passengers.
About 2.68 million passengers departed from the station in the first seven months of this year.
More than 50 million passengers are projected to depart from the station annually by 2035, when all the planned railways go into operation, according to the Huadu district government.
