Beijing child survives heat stroke, experts urge safety

A child who suffered from heat stroke after playing outdoor sports for an extended period without drinking water, was sent to the hospital for intubation treatment in the Chinese capital, Beijing News reported on Tuesday.

The report has not released the date of the case, saying it happened recently.

In recent days, temperatures in Beijing have maintained at a high level. The city has had 18 days with temperatures above 35 C since June, a record since meteorological records in the city began in 1951 and two successive days with temperatures above 40 C in July.

The child patient, who had symptoms of confusion, was sent to the hospital by the family for treatment. The patient's body temperature was 41 C, and was diagnosed with a heat stroke. The doctor gave the child tracheal intubation ventilator assisted ventilation and physical cooling treatment.

The young patient now is still under medical treatment and no further information was provided.

Experts remind the public that children are at higher risk of getting heat stroke, so outdoor activities should be reduced on hot days.

The ongoing high temperatures in the city threaten the health of people, especially those working under the heat wave. Thus, the government has been reminding companies to ensure labor rights in these conditions.

A tour guide, aged 49, died due to heat stroke on July 2. He collapsed during a group tour at the Summer Palace and, despite immediate medical attention, passed away. His death brought attention to the effect of continuous heat and the need to take care of those working in high temperatures.
