Intelligent home appliance industry

Hefei is the largest home appliance manufacturing base and industry cluster in China, and the country’s most influential and competitive home appliance manufacturing center.

In 2010, the home appliance industry became Hefei’s first industry to reach 100 billion yuan ($14.40 billion) in output value, taking up 20 percent of its industry in China. 

Taking home appliance as one of Hefei’s pillar industries, Hefei witnesses the world’s first Versatile Compact Disk (VCD), first bionic rubbing washing machine and the first mass-production tablet computer which can connect to a projector. 

During the 20 years’ development, it has formed a complete industrial chain integrating product research and development, producing key components and parts, manufacturing, logistics and after-sale services, becoming the largest household appliance production base.

Five renowned home appliance enterprises have settled in Hefei National High-tech Industry Development Zone, including GREE, Midea and Whirlpool (China). The supporting number of enterprises has exceeded 150. During the 11 months in 2017 (Jan to Nov), the home appliance’s total output value had reached 93.39 billion yuan, an increase of 4.8 percent compared with the same period of 2016. Among which GREE achieved 19.09 billion yuan, Midea Washing Machine 12.88 billion yuan, Midea Refrigerator 11.18 billion yuan and Whirlpool gained 10.6 billion yuan. The three enterprises’ total output value take up more than 80 percent of the industry in China. 

In 2017, 70 percent of the home appliances’ main machine and supporting parts are researched and developed by Chinese enterprises. More than 150 home appliance and relevant parts producing firms in Hefei National High-Tech Industry development zone produced 3.107 million household appliances, including 11.31 million air conditionings, 13.21 million washing machines, 5.75 million refrigerators and 800,000 small appliances, taking up 25 percent among all household appliances in China.
