The first Chinese-built new energy locomotive started operating in the city of Zibo, located in East China's Shandong province, on July 6.
The locomotive, which was originally aDongfeng 5internal combustion engine locomotive, has been refurbished and transformed into a lithium-ion battery-powered new energy locomotive.
It can be used for at least 15 to 20 years and has a much lower electricity operating cost compared with diesel fuel, saving the equivalent of over 100 metric tons of diesel fuel per year and reducing carbon emissions.
