A vegetable-themed festival kicked off in Guyuan, Ningxia Hui autonomous region, on Friday, bringing even more fame to a city already known for its agricultural products by retailers across the country.
The Lengliang Vegetables Festival — or Cold and Cool Vegetables Festival — is one of the most important activities held in the city for communication between growers and retailers about related businesses.
The vegetables produced in Guyuan are called lengliang vegetables because the weather in Guyuan is relatively cool throughout the year, with average temperatures lower than many other cities, such as Yinchuan in Ningxia and Guangzhou in Guangdong province, according to Han Congying of Pengyang county's vegetable industry development service center. Pengyang county is administrated by Guyuan.
He added that it's suitable for the production of fruit and vegetables, especially leafy ones.
The city produces more than 2 million metric tons of vegetables annually, 80 percent of which will be sold outside the city, including markets abroad, according to the local government.
