A widely known folk tale in China, The Legend of the White Snake has been adapted into many kinds of traditional Chinese operas, including Kunqu, Peking, Yuju and Qinqiang. One of the climaxes of the tale is the hero Xu Xian tricking the heroine, Bai Suzhen, to drink realgar wine on Dragon Boat Festival, following the advice of the monk Fa Hai. Thus, the theatrical works based on it have long been must-sees during the festival since ancient times.
