Recently, a groundbreaking ceremony was held on Yangguang Island of the Yangkou Port Economic Development Zone in Rudong county, Nantong, Jiangsu province, for a 110-kilovolt electric substation.
Achieving self-sufficiency in power consumption and zero carbon emissions, the substation will greatly improve the stability of the electricity supply on Yangguang Island.
Cao Cen, general manager of State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Co Ltd's Rudong branch, stated that the construction of the substation was necessary due to the insufficient electric supply from the existing 20-kV power supply system, which cannot meet future energy demands from four liquefied natural gas terminals.
Located on an artificial island about 13 kilometers offshore in Rudong, the substation covers a total area of 1,850 square meters. It is scheduled to be put into operation in June 2024, with an average annual electric power generation of 51,600 kilowatt-hours.
Special measures will be taken to ensure the safe operation of the substation. The structure and electrical equipment have been reinforced for earthquake resistance, wind resistance, and corrosion resistance. In addition to flexible cable supports, the cables will be arranged in a zigzag configuration to reduce the potential damage caused by bridge vibrations.
The substation will also be built with environmentally friendly materials, such as small modular buildings, standardized prefabricated materials, and pervious concrete roads, in adherence to energy conservation and emission reduction principles.
