Baise in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region is expected to have a total output of 1.25 million metric tons of mangoes this year, local officials announced on June 10.
Baise is the largest mango production base in China, growing more than 30 mango varieties. Last year, the overall mango orchard in Baise covered an area of about 1.37 million mu (91,333 hectares) with an output volume of 1.05 million tons. The total output value of the mangoes produced during this period reached 4.7 billion yuan ($656.2 million).
As one of the origins of mango cultivation in China, Baise mangoes were once a tribute to the imperial court since the Song Dynasty (960-1279). At present, the mango industry has become a pillar industry in Baise, and has become a great channel for locals to increase their incomes.
Baise has built an "internet + mango" model and sells mangoes to all regions of China and even the international market through its e-commerce platform.
Currently, Baise has introduced 10 mango processing enterprises, and the city's processing capacity reached about 200,000 tons in 2022. This year, Baise is expected to reach a capacity of more than 300,000 tons.
Baise mangoes have now become a Chinese geographical indication product that is protected by the European Union. The city has also established the Baise Mango Research Institute to introduce well-known experts into the industry, and has paid attention to the construction of local talent teams that provide scientific and technological support for the development of mango industrialization.
