Jinan promotes growth of new energy vehicles

Jinan, the capital of East China's Shandong province, has been making strides in promoting the development of its new energy vehicle industry due to its consistent efforts to bolster green development, local media reported.

The city has identified building a modern industrial system and accelerating the high-quality development of the real economy as one of its top 10 tasks for this year. To achieve this, authorities have been focusing on creating modern industrial chains and clusters to support the development of the city's modern industries. One of the key tasks involves developing 10 iconic industrial chain clusters, including one for eco-friendly and NEVs.

Jinan is currently home to a complete industrial chain for eco-friendly and new energy vehicles that includes the production of chips, power batteries, passenger cars, commercial vehicles, special vehicles, and components. As of 2022, there were 123 automotive and auto parts enterprises above designated size in Jinan that had a combined operating income of 69.21 billion yuan ($9.7 billion).

The city has also continuously promoted the development of the automotive industry and created an industrial ecosystem driven by hundreds of upstream and downstream enterprises.

Jinan's automotive industry possesses unique advantages that stem from the city's strong foundation in commercial vehicles. The city sold 158,000 heavy trucks, which accounted for 23.6 percent of all heavy trucks sold in China, in 2022. Jinan has also been ranked first in the country in terms of heavy truck exports for 18 consecutive years.

With regard to special-purpose vehicles, Jinan has eight large-scale enterprises, accounting for over 10 percent of the total in China, related to this field. It is also home to over 100 automotive components companies such as Bosch, Fister, and SKF.

Jinan is aiming to transform itself into a globally influential new energy vehicle industrial hub by 2025. To achieve this, it will continue to focus on the 10 iconic industrial chain clusters, including eco-friendly and new energy vehicles.
