The Chinese mainland will continue to extensively unite Taiwan compatriots to create a better future for national reunification and rejuvenation, Wang Huning, China's top political adviser, said on Monday.
Wang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks while meeting in Beijing with Wu Cheng-tien, chairman of Taiwan's New Party.
Wang, who is also chairman of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, gave full recognition to the party for its long-term efforts in promoting cross-Strait relations and advancing peaceful reunification of the motherland.
Wang said the mainland will fully implement the overall strategy for resolving the Taiwan question in the new era, and promote peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and deepen cross-Strait integrated development.
"Achieving the great rejuvenation is a shared responsibility of all compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait," he said, adding that the policy of peaceful reunification and "one country, two systems" is the best way to achieve reunification and is the most beneficial for the nation.
The fundamental purpose of reunification is to enhance the well-being of people on both sides and to realize people's aspirations for a better life, he added.
Wang stressed that "Taiwan independence" is a serious crime of separating the country, which is a dead end and will only bring deep disasters to Taiwan compatriots.
Reiterating adhering to the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus, Wang said the mainland will firmly support the patriotic and pro-unification forces in Taiwan such as the New Party, and resolutely oppose "Taiwan independence" separatism and foreign interference.
Efforts will be made to maintain the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and the stability of the Taiwan Strait, promote exchanges and cooperation between the two sides and deepen integration and development, he added.
Wu said in the meeting that reunification is the general trend of history, and only through reunification can Taiwan have a way out.
He said the New Party advocates peaceful reunification and strongly opposes "Taiwan independence" and external forces interfering in cross-Strait affairs.
Compatriots on both sides of the Strait are Chinese people and should work hand in hand to promote peaceful reunification and national rejuvenation, he added.
