The 2023 China (Suzhou) World Photonics Development Conference was held in Suzhou New District, Suzhou, East China's Jiangsu province, on May 30, local media outlets reported.

Spanning three days, the conference was sponsored by the Suzhou municipal government and the China Society for Optical Engineering and attended by renowned experts and industry elites.

Cao Lubao, Party secretary of Suzhou, said in a speech that Suzhou has listed photonics as one of 16 advantageous segments of the manufacturing industry and that the city has taken the lead in setting up the G60 Science and Innovation Corridor Laser Industry Alliance.

In 2022, the output of the photonics industry in Suzhou reached 360 billion yuan ($50.85 billion), with its core segment achieving an output value of over 60 billion yuan and forming a complete industrial chain from photon generation and transmission to application, according to Cao.

Cao noted that he expects more investors, entrepreneurs, and scientists to bring the best projects and talent to Suzhou to build the city into a new photonics industry hub.

Vice-governor Hu Guangjie said that Jiangsu has pursued innovation-driven development and accelerated the development of the photonics industry in recent years.

Hu expressed the hope that Suzhou will take the conference as an opportunity to give full play to the role of photonics in boosting industrial development and to construct an innovation hub of the photonics industry with international influence.

At the conference, the Suzhou municipal government and the CSOE inked a strategic cooperation agreement to build a Yangtze River Delta business headquarters of the CSOE, a Photonics Technology Collaborative Innovation Center, and an International Photonics Industry Innovation Alliance.
