Daishan conducts biodiversity survey

A biodiversity survey commissioned by the Daishan ecological environment bureau in Zhoushan, East China's Zhejiang province, recently spotted a Chinese egret on the county's tidal flat, local media reported.

This is the second time the bureau recorded the bird since it first conducted a biodiversity survey in May, said a staff member of the bureau. The staff member added that they also recorded Chinese goshawks and black-faced spoonbills; the latter is an indicator species for ecological environmental health.

The survey, which is expected to be completed by the end of May, 2025, aims to gain a better understanding of the county's ecosystem and the current situation of its biodiversity by carrying out assessments of the threatened level of its biodiversity and its conservation outcomes.

They will make lists of key protected species, rare and endangered species, and invasive alien species, and also draw sample-plot survey distribution charts and curves based on the survey results, said the staff member.

They will also collect electronic specimens and build a database in order to propose appropriate surveillance and protection measures for the county's biodiversity efforts, according to the staff member.

The survey aims to explore Daishan's unique conservation system and advance its green development, said the staff member.
