Five members of the Zhejiang mountaineering team reached the world's highest peak, Qomolangma, on May 18 at around 9:30 am. They are the first provincial mountaineering team in China to climb Qomolangma.
Among them was Zhu Weiyong, a resident of Shangyu town in Jiangshan, a county-level city of Quzhou in East China's Zhejiang province. To date, Zhu is the first person from Quzhou to reach the summit of Qomolangma.
Zhu joined the Zhejiang mountaineering team and began preparing for the climb in 2022. On April 14, the mountaineering team set off and reached the peak ofQomolangma after 34 days.
Climbing Qomolangma is every climber's dream. "I was so excited. The tears just flowed out. It wasn’t easy, but I was excited when standing at the highest point," said Zhu.
One thing that frightened Zhu was that after they reached the summit, one of his teammates ran out of oxygen and there were no spare oxygen cylinders around. Zhu gave his own oxygen cylinder to his teammate. "There is nothing more important than life and helping each other at the top of the world," he said.
Zhu's next goal is to climb all major peaks on seven continents and explore Antarctica and the Arctic.
