Guiyang, capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province, has been striving to promote the construction of a zero-waste city in recent years.

In 2022, Guiyang completed the application of a zero-waste city and was included on the list of national zero-waste cities during the 14th Five-year Plan Period (2021-25).

It has issued work plans and implementation plans for zero-waste city construction, and signed a cooperation agreement with the China Solid Waste and Chemicals Management Technology Center, under the control of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, to prevent and control solid waste pollution.

In 2022, Guiyang built 35 national and provincial green factories and six green supply chains. It achieved a general industrial solid waste utilization rate of 69 percent, a phosphogypsum utilization rate of 86 percent, a straw utilization rate of 89 percent, and an agricultural film recycling rate of 86 percent.

Among Guiyang's newly-built buildings, 81 percent are green buildings. Guiyang also cleaned and removed 1.78 million metric tons of domestic waste; promoted the sorting of domestic waste; and reduced the waste in industry, agriculture, construction and domestic areas. It also promoted the construction of technology, market and supervision systems for waste reduction.

As of the beginning of this year, Guiyang has detailed the construction of a zero-waste city, enhanced the guidance and promotion for zero-waste city construction, and raised the public's awareness of green lifestyles.
